Greenbrier Inn to Inn
A Self-Guided tour of the Greenbrier River Valley
The Greenbrier River Trail is a 77 mile long trail that was ranked by Backpacker Magazine & Bicycling Magazine as one of the top ten rail trails in the country. The original C & O railroad passed through sawmills,
bustling towns and farming communities. Depots that now serve bikers and tourists once were filled
with freight and passengers. Our Greenbrier River Trail Tours are for beginner to intermediate riders who enjoy taking in the
beautiful scenery and surroundings. The trail has lots of swimming holes, sightseeing options and opportunities to relax. The route has minimal climbing and requires little technical skill.
This trail is very popular with families and groups.
Day One - Arrival
The tour begins when you arrive at the Elk River Inn and Restaurant, situated on the headwaters of the Elk River.
Check in time is between 4pm and 6pm, provisions will be made for late arrivals. After you check in to one of our
charming B&B rooms you may take a stroll, short ride, or if you bring your
fly rod try your hand at trout fishing in the Elk. Dinner is a three course meal at our locally renowned restaurant.
Day Two
After a hearty country breakfast, we will shuttle you to the restored logging town of Cass where you will begin your ride following the river downstream through hamlets and farms of bygone years.
As you peddle, the scenic community of Cloverlick is at the 9.5 mile mark. Then at 16 miles you pass through the 510ft Sharp's Tunnel and a long trestle bridge where you can wade in the river or swim to cool off.
Your final destination is Marlinton, the Pocahontas County seat. When you arrive at your B&B then relax in the hot tub or explore the main street and find your way back for a pleasant meal prepared for you by your hosts.
Day Three
After another hearty breakfast, the group will be offered three ride options. The first is to be shuttled to Renick for the
shortest day of 14.5 miles. The next is Anthony Creek for a distance of 23.0 miles. Your last and longest is north Caldwell with a length of 39.0 miles.
All of these allow you to follow the river upstream (1/2 of 1 percent grade) to the whistle stop of Beard. The southern part of the trail will take you through many fields and pastures with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. At the end of the day your B&B hosts
will pick up and shuttle you back to your next Inn near the hamlet of Hillsboro. You can also have the option climbing back up to Hillsboro for the more athletic 4.5 miles. Relax and get cleaned up and get ready for a hearty meal at a local café.
Day Four
Rise and shine for a wonderful country breakfast. Sleep in and start a little later if you like. Ride the quiet narrow county roads lined with some of the most picturesque sheep farms in the state. You wind your way down to the Greenbrier River
and trail for your final 14.0 miles spin into Marlinton. Take your time stop and explore the villages of Seebert and Watoga. The ride today ends with a lunch at a local café on main street in Marlinton. The group is gathered up after lunch and shuttled
back to Elk River. Farewells and you are on you are way home.
