Tours
Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of West Virginia Mountain Biking. Since 1985, we have been perfecting our mountain biking program, making Elk River the oldest mountain bike center in the East. Our tours are carefully planned to maximize the beautiful mountain scenery in conjunction with the seasons. We invite you to come and experience hard-core single-track as well as gentle, rolling high country. Elk River has access to and knowledge about all the biking terrain in the National Forest near Snowshoe Mountain Resort you could want, supported by a concerned staff and warm hospitality.
Pocahontas County WV, named as one of Outside Magazine's best counties for the outdoors, is the birthplace of eight rivers and home to 302,000 acres of the Monogahela National Forest. Elk River offers immediate access to miles of excellent terrain and we consider ourselves the experts on West Virginia Outdoor Activities and West Virginia Mountain Biking. We offer a variety of mountain bike rentals.
Our trails begin at the center, traverse
the Gauley Divide and Sharp's Knob, and the
Highland Scenic Highway. The Highland Scenic
Highway offers access to many more trails in the
Cranberry Glades and Williams River area. The
Greenbrier River Trail, a 75 mile rail/trail
runs from Cass through
Marlinton and south to Caldwell, passes through
classic West Virginia beauty with plenty of Bed &
Breakfasts and camping along the way.
All of our West Virginia Mountain Biking trips
include comprehensive meals, lodging,
maps and guiding. We stay overnight at B&B's,
cabins and lodges. Most tours have vehicle
support throughout a large portion of each day,
enabling participants to take a break if
desired. Our guides are certified in first aid
and very knowledgeable about the terrain.

You should prepare to arrive at the Elk River
Touring Center Friday afternoon, anytime between
1-3 p.m. The Center is located on an old sheep
farm on the headwaters of the Elk River. Hosts
Gil and Mary will show you to one of the ten B&B
rooms. If renting a bike, you will be fitted at
this time.
At 3 p.m. we meet the other guests and set off on
some nearby loops to give you the feel
for the singletrack of Slatyfork, for a total of
8 miles of riding. Then it's back to the Inn to
clean up for dinner. The chef at Elk River
Restaurant prepares a fantastic meal. After
dinner, you may want to tinker with your bike or
soak in our outdoor hot tub.
Day Two
Saturday's ride will begin early, putting to
practice the techniques learned Friday, on the
best singletrack in the area. After breakfast, we
will ride (5.0 miles, 1500') or shuttle up to
Tea Creek Trail. We will cycle across the ridge
to the headwaters of the Gauley River before
circling the top of Gauley Mountain and exploring
some of the many old roads and trails that
meander across its top. Lunch will be packed and
carried so that you may snack all day at your
leisure. You can either shuttle or do a complete
loop back to the Center where we'll have a
fine dinner and relax. After dinner, a tech
session will illuminate the mysteries of bike
maintenance and trail side repairs. (16-24
miles)
Day Three
Sunday, after breakfast, we will shuttle up
to the Gauley Mountain trail head off West
Virginia's Highland Scenic Highway. This trail
traverses the ridge on an old railroad grade,
lined with rhododendron and spruce trees.
Descending back to Elk River will take us down
forest service road 24 with an option for more
technical singletrack at the base of the
mountain. (10 miles) Then we'll enjoy a delicious
buffet lunch before departing about 1-2 p.m.
- Ride routes may vary due to weather, group
ability, and trail conditions, etc.
Greenbrier Inn to Inn
A Self-Guided tour of the Greenbrier River
Valley
The Greenbrier River Trail is a 77 mile long
trail ranked by Backpacker Magazine &
Bicycling Magazine as one of the top ten rail
trails in the country. The original C & O
railroad passed through sawmills, bustling towns
and farming communities. Depots that now serve
bikers and tourists were once filled with
freight and passengers. Our Greenbrier River
Trail Tours are for beginner to intermediate
riders who enjoy taking in the beautiful scenery
and surroundings. The trail has lots of swimming
holes, sightseeing options and opportunities to
relax. The route has minimal climbing and
requires little technical skill. This trail is
very popular with families and groups.
Day One - Arrival
The tour begins when you arrive at the Elk
River Inn and Restaurant, situated on the
headwaters of the Elk River. Check in time is
between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Provisions will be made for

charming B&B rooms you may take a stroll, short
ride, or if you choose to bring your fly rod, try your hand
at trout fishing in the Elk. Dinner is a three
course meal at our locally renowned restaurant.
Day Two
After a hearty country breakfast, we will
shuttle you to the restored logging town of Cass
where you will begin your ride following the
river downstream through hamlets and farms of
bygone years. As you peddle, the scenic
community of Cloverlick is at the 9.5 mile mark.
At 16 miles. you pass through the 510ft
Sharp's Tunnel and a long trestle bridge where
you can wade in the river or swim to cool off.
Your final destination is Marlinton, the
Pocahontas County seat. When you arrive at your
B&B, relax in the hot tub or explore the
main street and find your way back for a
pleasant meal prepared by your hosts.
Day Three
After another hearty breakfast, the group will be offered two ride options. The first is to be shuttled to Renick for the shorter day of 32.5 miles. The next is Anthony Creek for a distance of 41.0 miles. The southern section of the trail will take you through many fields and pastures with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Stop and have a picnic lunch. At the end of the day, your B&B hosts will pick up in Marlinton and shuttle you back to Elk River in Slatyfork, where you will enjoy another delicious meal prepared especially for you by your hosts.
